Justin Mylo Talks Upcoming Collabs, Learning From Martin Garrix, Production Styles, And More!

Rising star Justin Mylo is only 22years old and has played at some of the biggest known festivals and venues like Tomorrowland, Sunburn, and World Club Dome. After dropping the three famous brothers, ‘Bouncy Bob’, ‘Groovy George’, and ‘Jumping Jack’, no one ever doubted the talent of Justin Mylo. Since 2015, his summers are filled with playing at the residential shows of Martin Garrix at Ushuaïa Ibiza. Over the years, he has developed his very own sound and got to share it with the world in the year of 2016, by releasing tracks on labels like Spinnin’ Records and Musical Freedom. 2017 was the year he started the ON/OFF brand with tracks like ‘Cheap Motel’ and ‘Paradigm’ and the tour episodes on Youtube. His collaboration with Martin Garrix, ‘Bouncy Bob’, became a big dance floor banger which got support all over the world from the biggest names in the scene. To celebrate the release of his new single, ‘Forever’, we had the pleasure of interviewing this incredibly talented artist.

Speaking about ‘Forever’, how happy are you with the finished product and its home on STMPD RCRDS?
“Super happy!! I’ve been playing Forever out for almost a year now and the crowds response has always been crazy. Of course always happy to be working with the STMPD family”

‘Forever’ brings out a very melodic side of your production style with you using upbeat melodies and euphoric synths, how do you enjoy making this type of music compared to your club-orientated tracks?
“I’m a sucker for melodies and chords! Whenever I’m producing I can just listen to them for hours haha. Sometimes I actually just spend an entire day just making chords with a simple piano plugin. “

With your releases over the past few years you have firmly cemented your signature production style within the future house world. Is there any other styles that you would be interested in giving a try?
“I’m trying not to think in genres too much. But I’m definitely also trying out doing more actual ‘songs’ writing in the studios with songwriters and guitar players making more poppy songs is something I also really like!”

Over the past couple of years, you have collaborated alongside big acts such as Martin Garrix and Mike Williams and released on big labels such as STMPD, Musical Freedom, Revealed among others. How have you found it to be learning under a well-traveled veteran such as Martin Garrix for example?
“Its crazy never could have dreamed about releasing on those labels when I was younger! As for working with Martijn we’ve been friends since we were about 12 years old so it just feels like having fun with a friend instead of ‘working’ together.”

If you only had 1 last collab remaining in your career, who would you like it to be with?
“I used to be a big Justin Timberlake fan my first concert was one of him so that would be the dream collab.”

Touring around the world has become the norm for artists such as yourself with multiple shows in different countries. What do you love about traveling and where has been your favorite place to perform?
“Just experiencing so many different cultures cuisines and meeting so many interesting people. And of course meeting all the fans getting to see and party with the people that make everything possible!!”

Moving on to the topic of production, what comes first in your process: the drop, the breakdown, the melody or all of the above?
“There is never one set process. Sometimes its the drop, another time the breakdown. But most of the time it starts with melody. Which I think is the most important thing about a song.”

When it comes to producing tracks, many artists struggle to find a balance between producing and regular life. How do you wind down away from the studio and are there any tips for upcoming producers out there to improve their workflow?
“For me spending time with friends is the ultimate way to wind down. But I must say with the hectic schedules I also like it a lot sometimes to just spend time at home do normal stuff get my groceries, cook and have some time for myself and be alone. For improving your workflow my tip is to not force it! You obviously have to put in the hours but you also have to know when to stop. Sometimes you just have to get out of the studio and come back the next day or even the next week with fresh ears. “

Ending the interview, would you like to share some exclusive news with us? 😉
“I think I have some fun collabs coming up! One with Mesto thats already going around the internet which we’ll release soon. And also working on a new one with Mike Williams.”
