Defqon.1 2026 was already facing major changes before the full cancellation was confirmed, with Q-dance first cancelling Friday and Saturday day tickets to reduce capacity during the extreme heat. The festival, held in Biddinghuizen, is one of hard dance’s biggest weekends, bringing together hardstyle, hardcore, rawstyle, and thousands of international visitors each year. With temperatures in the Netherlands expected to reach dangerous levels and KNMI issuing a Code Red warning, the situation moved beyond crowd management and became a wider safety issue. Q-dance later confirmed that the remaining days of Defqon.1 2026 could no longer continue safely, ending the festival weekend earlier than planned.

What Defqon.1 2026’s Cancellation Means After The Code Red Heat Warning
The cancellation of Defqon.1 2026 came after the situation changed from an event capacity issue into a national weather safety risk. Earlier in the week, Q-dance had already cancelled Friday and Saturday day tickets because of the expected heat, keeping access limited to weekend visitors so the site could manage crowd flow, shade, water points, and facilities more safely. That plan changed once KNMI, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, issued a Code Red warning for extreme heat in the Netherlands. As the country’s national weather, climate, and seismology institute, KNMI uses Code Red for weather that can create serious disruption or danger, including risks to public health, transport, emergency services, and large outdoor events. For Defqon.1, that warning meant the remaining festival days could no longer be treated as a reduced capacity weekend.
The practical impact was immediate for visitors in Biddinghuizen. Q-dance confirmed that the Holy Grounds would close from Friday, June 26, while parts of the site and The Wasted Lands would stay open temporarily without music so people already there could prepare to leave and arrange their journey home. Anyone who had not yet arrived was told not to travel to the festival, and tickets bought through official channels will be refunded, with more details on possible compensation expected after the weekend. The decision shows how serious the Code Red warning was for an event of this size, especially with thousands of people camping, walking between stages, waiting in queues, and spending long hours outside during extreme heat. For many visitors, the cancellation also means the focus shifted quickly from festival plans to getting home safely, especially for those who had travelled internationally or were already staying on site when the update came through.
What Visitors Should Know About Leaving Defqon.1 2026 And Refunds
For visitors already at Defqon.1 2026, the next step is no longer about adjusted festival access, but leaving Biddinghuizen safely. Q-dance has said parts of the Holy Grounds and The Wasted Lands will remain open until 03:00 Friday morning, while the Camping Grounds and part of the Festival Grounds will stay open on Friday without music and with essential facilities available. The aim is to give people already on site time to rest, pack, contact friends or travel providers, and arrange the journey home without forcing everyone to leave immediately during the night.
Visitors will be asked to leave Defqon.1 on Friday, and anyone who has not yet arrived should not travel to the festival. Q-dance has also confirmed that tickets will be refunded, with more information about additional compensation expected after the weekend. Bracelet balance refunds are still following the existing process, with early refund requests available from July 2, while merchandise pick up orders will be addressed separately next week. For international visitors and weekend campers, that means the priority has shifted to transport, accommodation, and getting out of the festival area safely while the Code Red heat warning remains the main concern.
For now, Q-dance is asking visitors to follow official updates, avoid travelling to Biddinghuizen if they are not already on site, and focus on leaving safely if they are already at the festival. More details on refunds and possible compensation are expected after the weekend, but the immediate reality is that Defqon.1 2026 has ended in a way no one wanted, especially for the people who planned their year around being there. The cancellation is disappointing for attendees, artists, crews, and everyone involved in the festival, but with a Code Red heat warning in place, the decision shows how quickly safety can overtake even the biggest events. DJ Mag has just announced results of their annual the top 100 festivals, receiving a record-breaking number of votes recorded in the poll once again.
DJ Mag Top 100 Festivals first started in 2019, when winners were selected by a panel of DJs. After a brief hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the poll returned in 2022 with votes being opened up to the public for the first time. Increased numbers have been recorded every year since, and, in 2025, votes came from every corner of the globe, from North and South America to Europe, Asia, Oceania and Africa. DJ Mag’s influence can be seen in the list below, where you’ll find festivals spanning a wide range of electronic music styles, from EDM and hard dance favorites with jaw-dropping production to major house and techno events and underground staples with a sound-system focus.
Topping this year’s ranking is Belgium’s legendary Tomorrowland, once again crowned the world’s No.1 festival. Known for its fantasy-inspired stages, impeccable production, and community-driven atmosphere, Tomorrowland continues to set the benchmark for global dance music events. In fact, DJ Mag readers will also note not far behind is Ultra Music Festival in Miami, which remains a defining moment on the global electronic calendar, signaling the start of the festival season with world-class lineups in the heart of downtown.
