A new name in large-scale audiovisual art installations arrives in Amsterdam this coming January 2023. Unfold.art is a brand born in the city itself which seeks to become the leading name in the field, and will launch with a brand-new show named SORA—taking place at the breathtaking Gashouder space from January 6 – February 5.
Unfold.art’s aim is to make immersive art accessible for everyone, producing large-scale experiences in collaboration with today’s most innovative artists from the worlds of art, technology, new media and sound. These breathtaking projects will be toured through black box locations across the world, and each will be experienced in three formats: as exhibitions, live performances, and a rave. These different setups enable the art to become accessible for a global and universal audience; from young children to their grandparents from live music enthusiasts to art critics and from yogis to clubbers.
Launching in January 2023 at the iconic Gashouder in Westerpark, Unfold.art is once again partnering up with Westergas for their debut show SORA; an immersive light show with mind-blowing surround sounds, created by creative studio NONOTAK (aka visual artist Noemi Schipfer and architect-musician Takami Nakamoto). The audience will be enveloped inside an immersive space where time stands still. Imagine a kinetic sky filled with lights; a play with shadows, oscillating as one massive choreographed entity.
NONOTAK works with light & sound installations and performance pieces to create ethereal, immersive, and dreamlike environments. These are built to envelope, challenge, and stagger the viewer, capitalizing on Nakamoto’s approach to space, light & sound and Schipfer’s experience with kinetic visual and geometric drawings. Their aesthetic is inspired by minimal architecture and optical art. Following their first collaboration in 2013, they have toured the world, from Miami’s Art Basel, to solo shows and live performances at Acxess Art Gallery in New York, Bluerider Art Gallery in Taipei, and at Dekmantel in Amsterdam, alongside collaborations with luxury brands such as Hermès and Cartier.
SORA is an exhibition without a beginning nor an end, it will feature a multitude of live shows from NONOTAK, where Noemi and Takami take center stage beneath the illuminating artwork. Attendees are invited to let go and immerse themselves in the hypotonic audiovisual experience, as the multidisciplinary exhibit guarantees to be equal parts meditative and inspiring.
“SORA is one of the biggest installations we have ever made in terms of scale. We got inspired by the volume of the Gashouder to create this new piece. We wanted to create a huge kinetic light installation in the center of the space where the lights and the movements are choreographed on an original soundscape”, says Noemi Schipfer, “SORA will be floating above the audience, close to the people to contrast the really high ceiling of the Gashouder. The idea is to play between two radical feelings of the space and develop a visual story out of it.”
