On 13 January, Bandcamp officially prohibited music created using generative AI, implementing new guidelines to ensure the platform remains a dedicated ecosystem for human-made art.

Bandcamp has taken one of the strongest positions yet in the ongoing debate around artificial intelligence and creativity. As of 13 January, the platform has officially banned music created using generative AI, marking a decisive move to protect human-made art within its ecosystem.

In a blog post titled Keeping Bandcamp Human, the company outlined new guidelines that prohibit music “generated wholly or in substantial part by AI” from being hosted on the platform. The policy also explicitly forbids AI-driven impersonation — meaning content designed to mimic the sound or style of existing artists using machine learning tools is now strictly off-limits.

According to Bandcamp, the decision is rooted in preserving trust. The platform has long positioned itself as a home for independent musicians and dedicated fans, and it wants listeners to feel confident that the music they’re supporting comes directly from real artists, not algorithms. The company stressed that clarifying its stance on generative AI allows musicians to continue creating freely while ensuring fans know the music they discover is genuinely human-made.

Bandcamp has also introduced a community-driven enforcement approach. Users can report tracks they believe have been created using generative AI through the platform’s existing reporting tools. While Bandcamp retains the authority to remove content suspected of violating the policy, it has not offered a precise definition of what qualifies as a “substantial part” being AI-generated — leaving some room for interpretation as the policy is applied in practice.

The announcement frames the move as a celebration of artistry rather than a rejection of technology. Bandcamp cited “the sheer quantity of human creativity and passion” that flows through the platform every day as a key motivation behind the new rules, reinforcing its commitment to artist-first values.

At a time when AI-generated music is rapidly spreading across streaming and distribution services, Bandcamp’s policy stands out as one of the clearest and most uncompromising responses from a major music platform. Whether others follow suit remains to be seen — but for now, Bandcamp has made its position unmistakably clear: human creativity comes first.
