Chico Rose Talks Relationship With Afrojack, Collaborations, Musical Style, And More!

This upbeat single is the quarantine pick me up that we all need right now. ‘Cloud 9’ tells the story of what could have been from a failed love story. The style of the music imagines all of the possibilities of the lovers and how they could have been on “cloud nine” instead of “in misery”. The somber meaning of the lyrics becomes uplifted by the continuous musical and instrumental beats in the background produced by Afrojack and Chico Rose. The cheery flow shows the happiness they could have had, and the lyrics by Jeremih’s impressive voice shows the real sadness they feel. The mix of the two create a truly remarkable sound and expression of past love. We had the pleasure of interviewing Chico Rose to celebrate this incredible release.

Starting off with ‘Cloud 9′, how happy are you both with the finished product and its home on Spinnin’ Records?
“I’m really happy with our new song Cloud 9. We started with this song about 6 months ago in Dubai. When we had the first idea we knew we had to finish this song. After that we send it to Spinnin’ Records and they loved it. I’m excited to work together.”

With this release, you have both followed up incredibly well on your previous tracks ‘Sad’, ‘The Bass’, and ‘2012’. When it comes to working together, what makes it so easy for both of you to produce fantastic tracks?
“Thank you! Afrojack and I know each other for a while now, I think something around 6 years. In those 6 years we actually learned working together in the studio for weeks in a row. Sending each other new ideas every day and giving each other feedback on those ideas. Seeing each other a lot in the studio makes it easy to work on a lot of music.”

With releases under multiple genres and styles, is there a certain genre you enjoy producing the most?
“I used to make a lot of Big Room and Progressive House back in the days but I really love House music. I think because I grew up with House music. My parents used to listen to it all the time. I’m more focussuing on danceable music now.”

Collaborating with artists such as Afrojack and releasing on one of the most influential record labels, Spinnin’ Records, how have you found it is to work with such big acts and labels to help grow yourself as an artist?
“That’s what I always dreamt about. I remember listening to Afrojack his music on Spinnin’ Records when I just started making music and now we are hanging out as best friends. Things can go really fast. Afrojack helped me with a lot in the whole music scene. Not only producing music but also all other things in the music industry. Releasing new music on Spinnin’ Records feels really good. :D”

If there was only 1 collab remaining to do in your career, who would you like to do it with? (1 within electronic dance music, and 1 outside that scene)
“I would say David Guetta and Coldplay”

You have released multiple collabs over the years, what do you enjoy most about working with other artists compared to working solo?
“The thing I enjoy most working with other artists is the beauty of blending signature sounds. Songs getting more unique and I’m pretty sure working together in the studio is way more fun then sitting alone..”

Ending the interview, would you like to share some exclusive news with us? 😉
“We are planning a really high back to back live set for Cloud 9!”
