With the release of ‘Make That Thang Go’, Laidback Luke and Unity end what was a magnificent year in 2019. We had the pleasure of interviewing both artists as they head into the new year. You can see the full interview below.
Q1: Speaking about ‘Make That Thang Go’, how happy are you both with the finished product and how both styles meshed?
Laidback Luke: “I’m extremely happy! Obviously, Bass House is big and the track has that feel in the bassline from the Unity side. With my added bleeps, I was able to make it Twisted House as will, which I love playing in my sets.”
Unity: “I’m ecstatic with the track. I think Luke adding his magic on the track totally brought It to a whole new level.”
Q2: As we close the year and with 10 releases collectively, how do you feel 2019 has been for both of you as artists?
Laidback Luke: “I’m not one to post up my Spotify Year Wrapped, because I’m a firm believer that stats on social media rub the wrong way regarding mental health for the viewer. There’s a reason Instagram took away the likes count and I think it’s awesome they did! But for me and my team, my Spotify Year Wrapped marked incredible numbers compared to 2018 and internally we all gave each other a thumbs up! I’ve released much more tracks in 2019 and we got placings in a lot more lists. Big ones for me were my “Oh Yes! (Rocking With The Best)” collaboration with Keanu Silva and the official Remix I did for Avicii’s “S.O.S.”
Unity: “2019 has been really amazing, especially ending it with a big collaboration with Laidback Luke.”
Q3: Entering a new year and a new decade, what are your goals (as an artist who has been at the top of his game for so long) in the upcoming years?
Laidback Luke: “2019 marked a pivoting point for me. It kind of felt like the years I went into right after I started producing with the Swedish House Mafia in 2005. A new era! This because of a producer breakthrough I had this year concerning mastering thanks to our fellow Mixmash Family member Pyrodox. He showed me how he masters his tracks and this was huge for me! So for 2020 I already have releases set out until the summer and I’ve told the team that I’d like to release tracks more frequently than in 2019. It used to be every 6 weeks, I want it faster than that in this day and age. In 2020 you’ll see me back and on fire! The key to keeping this up is keeping hungry and excited about what you do!”
Q4: As an emerging talent who is only beginning your artistic journey, what are your goals for the upcoming years?
Unity: “One word Learn. Of course, having goals of playing in major festival stages is always going to be there, but the most important goal for me is to learn more from people such as Luke.”
Q5: As an artist who is always working with upcoming talents along with naming a sublabel “ones to watch” to put the attention towards tomorrow’s artists, how important in your eyes is it for veteran artists to work with the next generation?
Laidback Luke: “It’s the only thing that matters really. As I’m getting older and more and more experienced, what should I do with all this knowledge? Have it die with me, or should I pass it on? Passing it on is the only way to keep the fire burning for the art. The life of music that has given me so much. I’d love for others to experience that too.”
Q6: As an emerging talent, how important is it for you to be working with veteran producers like Luke and what do you feel benefits you the most with working with big artists like that?
Unity: “I feel like it’s really important because just by working with Luke on this track, I’ve learned how to add little touches here and there to bring a track to a whole new level.”
Q7: With a number of collaborations released in 2019, who would you like to work within 2020?
Laidback Luke: “I have collaborations lined up with many great artists, which I will reveal more about soon. I’m always very open to collaborations, as long as it’s an easy process and there’s easy communication involved. The most important thing for me is to keep enjoying what I do : )”
Q8: In regards to your signature style, which veteran producer do you feel would mesh well with your electro/future house-influenced sound?
Unity: “Since I’m trying to implement ancient Chinese instruments with my tracks, I feel like I would mesh really well with KSHMR as he implements Indian sounds to his tracks.”
Q9: With the decade ending, what was your favorite self-released track and non-self released track of the past 10 years?
Laidback Luke: “My favorite self released track was probably ‘We’re Forever’. Yes, I released Turbulence and 1234 as well and I still play those in my sets, but ‘We’re Forever’ has been highly overlooked. It’s a hit and a classic! Sad thing is that it never caught the right attention. But in my ears it’s huge still : ). As far as non-released tracks I’d be looking at my Strictly Techno tracks which I’ll find an outlet for in the new year.”
Unity: “Self-released track would be “999”, and non-self released track would be A Sky Full of Stars by Coldplay, produced by Avicii. Still gives me goosebumps to this day.”
Q10: With an incredible track, are you guys working on anything new together and if so, when may we hear it?
Laidback Luke: “Not yet! But with how smooth this collaboration was and how easy it is to work with team Unity, I’m sure we’ll do another collab!”
Unity: “We’re always going to be cooking something up, and hopefully we’ll do another track together sooner than later.”
Q11: Moving away from music, what are you looking forward to in the new year/decade?
Laidback Luke: “I’m excited to see how it all evolves regarding Social Media, but also with Self-driving cars. Where human evolution will go and see where we’ll improve, not only technologically but as a community as well.”
Unity: “I’ve been trying to focus on health and fitness this past year. I can’t lie, touring has taken a toll on my body. I’m trying to follow Luke’s footsteps and hopefully get healthier and fitter.”
