President Macron requests for French house music, also known as ‘French Touch’ to be awarded a place in UNESCO’s world cultural heritage list.

The list covers everything on Earth that is of exceptional value to humanity and has been recognized as World Heritage in order to be preserved for the appreciation of future generations. Musical examples include Jamaican reggae, or more recently, Berlin techno, which was added to the list in 2023.

“I love Germany — you know how pro-European I am. But we don’t have to take lessons from anyone. We are the inventors of electro. We have that French touch,” supports President Macron in a recent interview, also citing icons of the genre like Daft Punk and Justice.

Without a doubt, ‘French Touch’ has a big part in the history of EDM, gaining popularity in the ’90s and ’00s, with songs like ‘One More Time,’ ‘Music Sounds Better With You’ and ‘Cassius 1999’ taking over clubs worldwide.

Its addition to the world cultural heritage list would be more than just a socio-political move, but an homage to the music that the likes of Thomas Bangalter and Modjo mastered and brought to the masses.

Should ‘French Touch’ be added to UNESCO’s world cultural heritage list, it would join other French creations such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the famous Baguette, which was only added to the list in 2022.
