Let’s go back to 2011, thirteen years ago today. On this day, the “Pioneer of Dubstep,” would put dubstep on the map by releasing his award-winning track, ‘First of the Year (Equinox)’. The person I’m referring to is none other than nine-time Grammy winner, DJ and producer, Skrillex.
‘First of the Year (Equinox)’ was the first track on the dubstep prodigy’s third EP, ‘More Monsters & Sprites’. With a reggae vibe for the intro, it quickly shifts into an abyss of darkness with the heavy coils and breaks that Skrillex is now known for.
The track peaked on charts worldwide, notably reaching #7 in Belgium and #85 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The music video, which explains the inclusion of “Call 911 now!” in the song, received nominations for both Best Short Form Music Video at the 54th Grammy Awards and Best Electronic Dance Music Video at the MTV Video Music Awards. It ultimately won MTV’s VMA for Best Visual Effects in a Video in 2012.
If you’ve ever wondered, “What does ‘Equinox’ in parentheses mean?” wonder no more. ‘(Equinox)’ is actually an old demo track that Skrillex recorded and later incorporated into the song with some adjustments. In a way, he’s paying homage to his earlier work.
