Robin Barclay Talks All About His New Single, How It Was Created, His Inspirations & More!

Robin Barclay‘s latest single ‘Flaunting It’ is a straight vocal tech-house banger for the dancefloor. The track features a modern, unpredictable vocal full of attitude combined with a chunky, relentless bassline and rave stabs. Release via Xclusive Records on the 10th March 2023, the track has already gained early support from Amazing Radio with Shell Zenner opening her new music show with the original mix. We had the pleasure of speaking with Robin about this new single among other topics.

Hey Robin, thanks for speaking with us, how are you ?
Amazing! It’s been such a busy year already. My ‘Acid Theory E.P.’ (featured on EDM House Network) reached No.23 on the beatport charts, I’ve released the ‘Ayr on Acid E.P.’ with Sandy Records and my track ‘Flaunting It’ just got released with Xclusive Records.

Flaunting It! How happy are you to finally have this one out and can you give me a little insight into the creation of this single? (inspirations, time taken, etc) ?
Yeah I’m happy. My goal was to make something different that works in the club. I’ve always been obssesed with those tracks where the vocal is unpredictable and I wanted to marry that up with a relentless bassline and some rave stabs. I think the result is a really high enegry track with plenty of attitude. I think with production, you have to find what works best for you. I have this unwritten rule that I make my tracks in less than 4 hours. If a tracks going to run over 4 hours, like this one did, I force myself to take a break from listening to music and do something else and come back to it later. Otherwise my performance drops off, I start changing things and really just get into a mess.

This is your first single of 2023, do you have any plans for this year?
I’ve got a 2 track E.P. signed to ‘It’s Just Noize’. It’s due for release in April. I’m really excited about it too. I’ve also got a few unsigned track I’m keeping up my sleeve.

If you could pick one stage at any festival, where would you like to play in 2023?
Stage Confetti! I know it’s not the biggest or most prestigious but there’s something I like about more intimate stages and it’s just a cool place.

What event/gig are you looking forward to most this year?
I can’t wait to play at Wax City @ Venue 38 in April. It’s going to be a historic weekend for my hometown with Pavilion Festival and Streetrave Festival taking place over the weekend. The whole place will have such an incredible atmosphere.

For you, what’s the most rewarding part of DJing?
There’s so many but honestly, playing your own music out live is such a rush. Also, the idea that you can introduce someone to their favourite song or be a part of a night they remember forever is a special feeling.

Do you have any non-music goals for 2023?
I’d like to drive a jet ski again and go snorkeling.

Looking back on 2022, did you have any lessons that you learned?
Stay true to yourself.

Thanks for taking the time to speak with us, do you have anything else you’d like to reveal to our readers?
My pleasure! I’ve got so much planned for this year, follow me at @robin_barclay_dj
