SRI Shares New Jersey Club Single ‘hmph’

SRI shares new single ‘hmph’ as she brings Desi vocal textures into 150 BPM Jersey club

Brooklyn-based artist, producer and DJ SRI is set to release ‘hmph’ on July 31, a 150 BPM Jersey club track that brings together flipped femme and Desi vocal textures with hyperpop and ballroom influences. At the centre of the single is one small “hmph,” which is repeated and manipulated until it becomes a key part of the track itself. The vocals are chopped heavily enough that some fragments work more as texture than language, while the production also carries an influence from SOPHIE. A ballroom section appears in the second half, adding another club reference without pulling the track away from its Jersey club core.

SRI turns one vocal expression into the centre of ‘hmph’

Instead of using a full lyrical hook, SRI builds ‘hmph’ around a brief vocal reaction. That choice gives the track a clear identity from the start, with the repeated “hmph” becoming something that works both rhythmically and conceptually. As the vocal is cut and repeated across the production, it stops feeling like a one-off expression and becomes part of the track’s percussion.

That same treatment extends to the femme and Desi vocal textures surrounding it. Individual words are not always meant to stay clear, with SRI chopping them until their tone and rhythm become more important than what is being said. The result gives the vocals a physical role inside the production while still keeping the Desi influence present.

The 150 BPM pace keeps the track firmly connected to Jersey club, but ‘hmph’ also reaches into other areas of club music. The advance material cites SOPHIE as an influence, which comes through in the more processed and synthetic details, while touches of hyperpop add another layer to the production. Later, the ballroom section changes the rhythmic feel again before the track returns to its central vocal idea.

‘hmph’ continues SRI’s recent move deeper into club music

The release follows ‘STOP&STARE’, which saw SRI continue working with Jersey club while keeping Desi melodic and rhythmic ideas within the production. Her recent music has increasingly focused on club styles including Jersey club and house, while her Tamil background continues to appear through vocals, percussion and melody.

That connection between personal experience and club production has also been present in earlier releases. On ‘THIMIRU’, SRI took a Tamil word that can be used to criticise women for having too much audacity and turned it into something centred on confidence. The track carried Tamil influence into electronic production and showed how she uses language and cultural references as part of the music itself.

With ‘hmph’, the idea becomes more immediate. There is no long phrase or full lyrical concept carrying the track. Instead, one short expression is given enough repetition and variation to carry the record, while the production around it moves between Jersey club, hyperpop and ballroom without losing focus.

SRI continues bringing Tamil and Desi influences into her work

SRI’s catalogue has consistently connected electronic production with her Tamil background. Earlier work, including the Goddess Complex project, incorporated Carnatic vocals alongside hip hop and hyperpop influences, while later releases have moved further into club music.

Her DJ sets reflect a similarly broad range, moving through Jersey club, house, hip hop, baile funk and South Asian club music. In 2026, SRI also appeared across multiple showcases at SXSW, including the South Asian House SOUNDVILLA event, adding to previous appearances on The Lot Radio and support slots for artists including Raja Kumari.

As her music has moved further towards faster club production, the Desi and Tamil elements have remained part of how she approaches sound instead of appearing as separate additions. ‘hmph’ continues that approach by placing Desi vocal textures directly inside a 150 BPM Jersey club track while introducing hyperpop and ballroom references around them.

‘hmph’ by SRI is set for release on July 31, you can stream it here.

Laidback Luke has released his new take on A.S.H.A.’s ‘JJ Tribute’ via Fankee, following a chart-topping 2K26 remix pack.

Global dance music heavyweight Laidback Luke has just released his new take on A.S.H.A.‘s ‘JJ Tribute’ via Fankee, the revolutionary community-driven imprint redefining the relationship between artists and their audiences.

“JJ Tribute” has just achieved a major double No. 1 on the Music Week Upfront Club Chart and Commercial Pop Chart with the 2K26 Remix pack, further underlining the enduring impact of the iconic tune and its continued relevance across today’s dance music landscape.

Originally released in 1990 on Beat Club Records, A.S.H.A.’s “JJ Tribute” was created by three young Italian producers, aged just 18-20, in their Milan-based recording studio. The tune quickly gained massive popularity in the UK, becoming a club staple and an iconic anthem of the rave movement. In 1995, a series of remixes released through Ffrreedom, a subsidiary of FFRR Records, pushed the tune to No. 38 on the Official UK Singles Chart, further cementing its place in dance music history. Over the years, “JJ Tribute” has received unwavering support from top international DJs and remains one of the defining tunes of ’90s rave culture, with DJ Mag ranking it No. 48 in “The Hot 100, The Best Club Tunes Ever!”

Now, more than three decades after its original release, Laidback Luke brings his own contemporary vision to the iconic record. Known for his instinctive approach to house and electronic music, technical precision and ability to connect generations of dance music, Laidback Luke is a natural fit for a tune with such deep roots in club culture. The Dutch DJ and producer has been a major force in electronic music for more than two decades, performing at some of the world’s biggest clubs and festivals while building an influential catalogue of original productions and remixes.

Throughout his career, Laidback Luke has collaborated with and remixed some of the biggest names in music, including Daft Punk, Madonna, Rihanna, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Pharrell, Maroon 5, Tiësto, Depeche Mode, Moby and Calvin Harris. He has also played an important role in supporting and mentoring the next generation of electronic artists, while establishing himself as an influential educator and advocate for DJ and production culture. His new interpretation of “JJ Tribute” pays homage to the spirit and energy of the original while bringing it firmly into the modern dancefloor.

The release arrives via Fankee, a new kind of music imprint built around a simple idea: fans should have a meaningful role in the music they believe in. In an industry increasingly shaped by algorithms, fleeting virality and platform gatekeepers, Fankee flips the traditional label model by turning audiences from passive consumers into active participants. Fans discover artists early, promote releases, activate their networks and contribute directly to an artist’s growth. Meaningful contributions are tracked and translated into reputation and co-ownership, creating a model where participation is earned rather than bought, and where fandom can evolve into influence and influence into ownership.

“JJ Tribute” is a natural fit for this philosophy: a record born from the underground, spread organically through club culture and championed by DJs and fans is now entering a new chapter through an imprint built around community. With Laidback Luke bringing a fresh perspective to A.S.H.A.’s enduring rave classic, “JJ Tribute” connects the pioneering Italian producers who created it, the ’90s rave generation that turned it into an anthem, and a new era of music fans who are helping shape what comes next.

Dizzee Rascal has released his ninth studio album, ‘We Want Bass’. A 15-track project that spans House, RnB, Rap, Dubstep, Speed Garage and Bassline, and it is exactly what the title promises, a celebration of all things bass, built around purpose-driven dancefloor tracks that pay homage to the UK’s underground scene while putting Dizzee‘s lyricism front and centre.

The Album

‘We Want Bass’ opens with ‘Foxtrot Oscar’, which sets the tone immediately, pairing Dizzee‘s quickfire one-liners with a high-tempo bassline beat that makes it clear what the next 14 tracks are going to feel like. Among the highlights are the two singles released ahead of the album. ‘C U Dance’ was the first taste of the project, followed by ‘All Night’, which dropped on June 17 to coincide with England’s opening match of the FIFA World Cup. Dizzee marked the release with a live performance at Boxpark Wembley, bringing his energy to one of the summer’s biggest sporting moments. Both tracks tap into the pulse of contemporary club culture while keeping the lyrical sharpness and charisma that have defined his career across more than two decades.

With festival appearances at Y Not Festival, Boardmasters, and Victorious Festival already behind him this summer, Dizzee will now take We Want Bass around the world with headline tours across the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

GIXBLEX and Jack Smash have unveiled their brand new collaboration “Turn The Lights Off,” out now through Magic Music.

GIXBLEX and Jack Smash have unveiled their brand new collaboration ‘Turn The Lights Off’, out now through Magic Music. The track brings two producers with a shared passion for high-energy electronic music together for a release that leans into the darker, more aggressive side of the current Hypertechno movement.

Built around the idea of maximum energy, ‘Turn The Lights Off’ draws from the high intensity of Techno and Hard Dance while pushing into the harder territory that has come to define modern Hypertechno. The title captures that atmosphere well too, as there’s something instinctive about the moment the lights go down and the music takes over completely, and that is exactly the feeling GIXBLEX and Jack Smash are going for here.

For GIXBLEX, the release marks another step forward in his progression as a producer and another moment in building his identity within the harder dance space. Magic Music‘s international reach and electronic-focused catalog gives the track a solid platform to find its audience beyond their existing fanbase.
