David Guetta and Nicky Romero quickly became one of the community’s favourite collaborations and close to being a super duo after they released numerous hits like ‘Metropolis’, ‘Wild One Two’, and most recently, ‘Ring The Alarm’. I discovered that this super duo had a bunch of unreleased collabs which will never see the light and ‘Oval’ is one of them.
The story began in 2011 when Guetta played this track at Amsterdam Dance Event for the first time. The intro was rather futuristic followed by heavy beats on the buildup. The intriguing aspect is the drop, it sounded very fresh (for the time) and blended with dirty Dutch vibes, with Nicky crafting this additional twist. Besides, it also reminded me of 2009 – 2010 Guetta when he released hits like ‘Sexy Chick’ and ‘When Them Girls At’. So, I expected that ‘Oval’ would be released, along with ‘Metropolis’ and other unreleased tracks at the time by early 2012.
Unfortunately, ‘Oval’s release date remained uncertain while both David and Nicky constantly released other tracks. There are few speculations why ‘Oval’ wasn’t released until now. Firstly, both of them had hectic tour dates as they performed all around the world, so they couldn’t meet with each other to finalize the track. Secondly, Nicky‘s anxiety forced him into a hiatus for a year, with a few releases between 2014 and 2015. Thirdly, David had switched his direction and started to experiment with mainstream music by the time the album ‘Dangerous’ came out.
Nicky‘s recovery helped him get back on track a few years later and teamed up with David again on ‘Ring The Alarm’, which may explain how ‘Oval’ was replaced and “evolved” into a new sound. In conclusion, the collaboration between David and Nicky always reminds us of their teamwork, friendship, and dedication to EDM. Till then, ‘Oval’ is shelved in the discography of unreleased music in the history of dance music.
