Timmy Trumpet Talks Debut Album, Artist Pressure, Unreleased Festival Music & More!

Two of the world’s most renowned dance artists Timmy Trumpet and Afrojack have joined forces for an incredible new single: ‘Stay Mine’. It’s a team up that resulted in something quite remarkable; a melancholic yet powerful record featuring cool pulsating bass chords, nicely rolling house rhythms, subtle drops and invigorating vocals. Obviously, here’s two powerhouse producers at work, out now on Spinnin’ Records. We had the pleasure of speaking with Timmy Trumpet to celebrate the release of this track.

Let’s kick it off with ‘Stay Mine’ alongside Afrojack. How happy are you with the finished product?
“I love it! It’s just a fun record with a super catchy melody. I think you can hear both of us in the record. That’s my favourite part of collaboration – when two people make something that wouldn’t turned out the way it did without each other’s influence.”

This is the first time you guys have teamed up to create a track. How did it come about?
“I’ve always wanted to work with Afrojack. I’ve been a big fan of his music for years and we’ve caught up backstage and on tour a few times but this year we finally got to get together and make a track happen.”

As an artist who has been on the top of their game for years now, was there any pressure to make this collab live up to expectations?
“I try not to feel pressure when it comes to making music. Music for me has to be fun if nothing at all. It just doesn’t work for anyone if it’s not. I always try and do my best and try make something a little different than I’ve done before and that’s all I can really do.”

Usually when two producers come together they get a chance to test their new track in front of a crowd. This was not possible this time around but were you guys excited to see the online reaction once it was revealed?
“To be honest it’s not the sort of track that I usually play in my sets. A lot of the music I make is not music I play in my shows. I listen to all music and I love making all types of music. Music is about emotion and being in the moment with a track no matter what the vibe.”

‘Stay Mine’ crossed 1 million streams in a couple of days. Has the success of this single led to any discussions of a follow-up?
“We were already planning a follow-up before the track even came out. You can tell early in the process whether you’re gonna really like collaborating with someone or not, regardless of how the track goes once it’s released. Follow up for sure! Who knows what will do this time?”

With both of you cementing yourselves as mainstage energetic artists, do you feel the next collab could be a festival dominator?
“I would play twinkle, twinkle little star at a festival tomorrow… just get me back on that stage!”

2020 saw you unveil your first album. How did it feel to finally scratch that milestone from your bucket list and are there any thoughts about a second?
“I’ll definitely be back for a second album. There is an amazing feeling finally being done with your debut artist album. You only get one debut album and I feel like I’ve been writing it my entire life. It’s taken the best part of the last five years to be able to put together that body of work. I can’t wait to do it all again.”

With you being synonymous with your live performances, how has it been the past year focusing solely on working in the studio?
“It is what it is. I’m sure every DJ on the planet wishes they had been out touring and playing shows and that everything was just like it was. But it isn’t so you do your best given any situation. I’ve worked harder in the studio than I ever have before. I haven’t wasted a minute not being on tour. Sleeping at nighttime in your own bed is a weird experience but one I’m definitely getting used to. I’m sure I’ll be back to getting an hours sleep at the airport soon enough!”

Although you have released numerous singles in the past year, are you guys sitting on some special music that deserves a crowd for the first play?
“Oh definitely, there’s some bangers I can’t wait to get out there! I’ve got one coming out in a couple weeks that is made for the main stage.”

Moving forward with the year and vaccines being rolled out worldwide, what are you most excited about when the world returns to normal?
“People! There are so many people I can’t wait to see again in the flesh. Amazing friends I’ve made from every corner of the world in doing this job.”

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions!
“You’re very welcome, thank you!”
