Insomniac Introduces New Security Measures to Combat Pickpocketing

In response to a rise in pickpocketing at raves and festivals since the pandemic, Insomniac Events has introduced a new set of security measures aimed at protecting festival goers. Insomniac now checks bags as attendees leave the event, a new yet effective method designed to prevent theft at some of the biggest EDM events.

The rave scene in the US has seen a surge in reported thefts. Pickpocketing rings, often working in groups, have targeted festival goers, taking advantage of the packed environments to steal phones, wallets, and other personal items.

One method thieves use is wrapping stolen phones in foil, a tactic meant to block cellular signals and prevent tracking. In response, Insomniac’s security teams are checking for unusual bags with increased weight or “upward bags” that appear to be packed irregularly, hoping to catch these individuals before they make it off the premises.

Insomniac’s approach involves checking bags at the exit, weighing them, and flagging any bags that appear abnormally heavy or suspicious. This step could be especially effective because it occurs at a time when thieves may least expect to be searched—on the way out rather than in.

For the EDM and rave community, these measures represent a step in the right direction. Raves are spaces meant for freedom, music, and unity, and reducing pickpocketing incidents will help maintain the positive, welcoming atmosphere that keeps the community coming back.
