Swedish House Mafia earn their fourth Billboard Dance Airplay No. 1 with Happiness Is So Sad

When Swedish House Mafia released Happiness Is So Sad with Lykke Li in July, it stood out as one of the trio’s more emotional releases. The track pairs melancholic piano chords with Lykke Li’s vocals and a more reflective side of dance music. A major Swedish team also worked on the record, including Max Martin, Oscar Holter, Fred again.. and PARISI. Before its release, Swedish House Mafia tested the song during their Ushuaïa Ibiza residency and later played it at Tomorrowland. Three months later, that early hype has translated into a major chart result. Happiness Is So Sad has now given Swedish House Mafia their fourth No. 1 on Billboard’s Dance Airplay chart.

A Fourth Dance Airplay No. 1 for Swedish House Mafia

Swedish House Mafia already have a long history with Billboard’s Dance Airplay chart, with Save the World, Don’t You Worry Child with John Martin, and Wait So Long all reaching No. 1 in previous years. Happiness Is So Sad now adds another chart-topper to that list after climbing from No. 4 to No. 1. Radio plays for the track increased by 28% during the latest tracking period, giving the trio their fourth No. 1 on the chart.

Beyond adding another No. 1 to Swedish House Mafia’s history, the track has also delivered two firsts. Lykke Li earns her first No. 1 on any US Billboard chart through the collaboration, while DANSA, the trio’s independent label, earns its first Dance Airplay No. 1. The result also follows Wait So Long topping the same chart in 2025, giving Swedish House Mafia No. 1s in consecutive years.

The Story Behind Happiness Is So Sad

Recorded in Stockholm, Happiness Is So Sad brought Swedish House Mafia together with Lykke Li and a wider Swedish production team that included Max Martin, Oscar Holter, Fred again.. and PARISI. The collaboration gave the track a distinctly Swedish character, with melancholic piano chords and Lykke Li’s vocals giving it a more emotional edge than some of the trio’s larger festival releases.

A pretty typical moment of how we worked on this record. Another room, another city, one more listen before we could let it go. Lost count of the rounds a long time ago. Same obsession every single time. Nothing about that ever changes. Thank you for listening, for every message and every kind word along the way. HAPPINESS IS SO SAD

That emotional contrast was especially important for Lykke Li, who described the collaboration as her first time making what she considered “real dance music.” She also connected the song to a very Swedish feeling of wanting to dance and cry at the same time. That balance between euphoria and sadness became one of the main ideas behind Happiness Is So Sad, giving the track a stronger emotional identity alongside its dance production.

From the Release to Its Latest Live Moments

The song has continued to receive attention beyond radio since its July release. Lykke Li joined Swedish House Mafia at Portola Music Festival in San Francisco on September 27, giving the collaboration another major live moment after its earlier festival plays. The appearance also gave fans one of the first opportunities to see the artists perform the track together on stage.

Its official music video followed later in September, taking a much more personal approach than a traditional dance music visual. Directors Theo Lindquist and Jorge Camarena filmed the video using 25 phones during a house party, presenting the night through different perspectives in a vertical format. That visual continued the emotional idea behind the song by focusing on individual moments within the party instead of simply documenting the celebration itself.

With Happiness Is So Sad now sitting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Dance Airplay chart, the collaboration has become one of the strongest releases from Swedish House Mafia’s current independent era. For Lykke Li, it has also opened a new chapter in dance music while giving her a first US Billboard No. 1.
