Axwell reveals ‘Don’t You Worry Child’ was nearly left unfinished after Swedish House Mafia struggled to complete the track

Don’t You Worry Child became closely tied to Swedish House Mafia’s original run after its release in 2012. Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso were preparing to step away from the group, which gave the song even more importance during that period. More than a decade later, Axwell has explained how difficult the track was to finish. He also revealed that the trio came close to not completing it at all. The story offers a different look at one of Swedish House Mafia’s most loved songs.

How Don’t You Worry Child Came Close to Never Being Released

During his conversation with Brian Fink on America’s Dance 30, Axwell said Don’t You Worry Child came “pretty close to not getting finished.” He explained that Swedish House Mafia can spend so long revisiting a track that they begin questioning whether it should come out at all. In some cases, continuing to change a song can eventually damage what they liked about it in the first place.

Those doubts became even stronger when Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso played the track for their label. Axwell recalled being told, “this is not it,” but the trio still believed in the song. With their final shows approaching, they decided they needed to release it. Axwell said they trusted their own judgement and went ahead despite the label’s reaction.

The Original Story Behind Don’t You Worry Child

Long before Swedish House Mafia completed their version, John Martin and Michel Zitron had started the song together in 2010. The pair were still getting to know each other when they began talking about their relationships with their fathers. That conversation led to the idea behind Don’t You Worry Child. Working in Zitron’s studio, they played around with a loop before the melody quickly followed. They completed the song in one day.

Their connection with Sebastian Ingrosso followed as Martin and Zitron began presenting song ideas to him. The first collaboration to come from that relationship was Save the World, which Swedish House Mafia released in 2011 with Martin’s vocals. His voice appeared on the track without a featured artist credit, although he also helped write the song.

@edmhousenetwork They had no idea how big this song was about to become 🥹 On March 5, 2012 in Sydney, Swedish House Mafia were listening to an almost unfinished version of “Don’t You Worry Child,” months before it was released as their farewell single. At the time, it was still a rough demo, but the song would go on to become one of the most important records of their career. Featuring vocals from John Martin, the track later hit No. 1 in the UK, Sweden, and Australia, peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, earned a Grammy nomination, and became their most commercially successful song. The official music video has also passed a billion views, turning that early backstage listen into a rare look at a song before it became EDM history. From a rough demo in Sydney to one of Swedish House Mafia’s most emotional records, “Don’t You Worry Child” became a defining part of their story. With Don’t You Worry Child, John Martin received a featured credit alongside Swedish House Mafia. Martin and Zitron had written the original song before the trio developed it into the version listeners eventually heard. The collaboration continued a working relationship that had already produced Save the World, while giving Martin far more visibility as the voice behind the record.

From Farewell Single to One of Swedish House Mafia’s Biggest Songs

By the time Don’t You Worry Child reached listeners in 2012, Swedish House Mafia had already announced plans to separate. Its official video used footage from their final UK concert at Milton Keynes Bowl on July 14, 2012, where they also performed the song. That connection placed it directly within the closing months of the trio’s original run.

What followed went far beyond the uncertainty surrounding the song before its release. Don’t You Worry Child became Swedish House Mafia’s first and only UK No. 1 single, spending six weeks inside the Top 10 and 60 weeks in the Top 100. It also reached No. 1 on the UK Dance Singles Chart. The song later earned a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording.

Looking back at that success makes Axwell’s recent comments even more interesting. Swedish House Mafia struggled to finish the song, and their label questioned whether they should release it. The trio still trusted the record, and it went on to become their only UK No. 1 and one of the songs fans associate most closely with their original farewell. More than a decade later, knowing how uncertain its future once was adds another side to the story of Don’t You Worry Child.
