Rockstar Games apparently wanted Daft Punk for GTA VI so badly that budget wasn’t even part of the conversation.

According to music news account HasItLeaked, Rockstar reportedly approached Daft Punk’s management about reuniting the duo to create music for the upcoming game, offering what was described as an “essentially unlimited budget.”

Yes — we were potentially one very expensive “yes” away from getting Daft Punk back.

The reunion obviously didn’t happen, and it’s worth noting that neither Rockstar nor Daft Punk has confirmed the report. The duo officially split in 2021 after 28 years together, and despite plenty of fan speculation since, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo haven’t shown any signs of bringing Daft Punk back full-time.

So, Rockstar decided to turn to fellow French electronic icons: Justice

While Justice were reportedly Rockstar’s second choice, they have officially composed the game’s original score. Their first release from the project, “Flower in a Hurricane” featuring Tame Impala, SZA and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, is already out and appears in the GTA VI launch trailer.

Would GTA VI have been enough to bring Daft Punk out of retirement? Apparently not. But the idea of driving through Vice City for the first time with a brand-new Daft Punk score in the background is going to hurt a little now that we know it might have been possible.
